I am a wargamer interested in Nam (beside being also an historian covering the same period, I will present a paper on the MRF very soon at King's College London)and, before buying I have some questions. I am usually playing with 6mm (1/300 scale) but I have found the GHQ riverine kits too large for larger games (if your infantry stand is a squad or platoon the idea of giant ATC or Monitor is quite weird) so I am thinking to get some of yours. Have oyu ever tried to put them near 1/300-1/285 scale stuff? And what are the rough dimensions of the ATC and monitors?
I can scale up the 1/600 models but because the detail on 1/600 scale models is minimal compared to 1/285 (GHQ), I would have too rework the models to give more detail. The models are based on drawings for the Osprey book Vietnam Riverine Craft 1962-75 by Rottman and also US naval drawings where the ATC dimension is given as 17m x 5.3m. As a point of note GHQ's masters are handmade so accuracy may go out whereas mine are done on Google Sketchup and I can work to 0.1mm dimensions dependent of material.
I do not need a rescale, for larger action GHQ models look out of place because they are too big (it is the problem when you go over 1 to 1 representation, I was thinking to have the boats in 1/600 (like aircrafts and helicopters) and the ground forces in 1/300. As absurd it may seems I think it could work due to scale abstraction on the table. Otherwise an ATC will take the frontage of an infantry company. After quick calculations I reckon an ATC i 1/600 is 28mm long it is right?
Models on Sketchup are 27.8mm but I have never measured them after printing so don't know if they lose/ add anything during the process. To me they look ok against O8's PBR.
Just a question,
